Where it came from
Heartcatch Precure! was produced by Toei Animation as the seventh installment in the long-running Pretty Cure franchise. Premiering in 2010, the series was conceived as a departure from the aesthetic of its predecessors, moving away from the more traditional magical girl look toward a distinct, stylized approach. The production team aimed to emphasize themes of fashion, flowers, and personal growth, creating a visual language that felt fresh and emotionally resonant within the shojo genre.
The series' unique character designs were created by Yoshihiko Umakoshi, an animator and designer known for his expressive and fluid work. Umakoshi utilized a simplified, more rounded character style that allowed for highly dynamic movement and distinct facial expressions, which was a significant shift from the franchise's previous character sheets. Upon release, this choice was widely praised by critics and fans alike for its artistic versatility, helping the series achieve high critical acclaim and a dedicated following that appreciated its maturity and emotional depth.
