Hermit Village

Hermit Village, known in its original Japanese context as Sennin Buraku, debuted in 1963 as a pioneering television series produced by the studio Eiken. It holds a significant place in media history as the first adult-oriented animated television program broadcast in Japan, adapting the long-running newspaper comic strip created by Ko Kojima. The series offered a satirical and often ribald look at the lives of eccentric residents within a secluded, traditional village.

The animation style was intentionally simplistic, reflecting the minimalist aesthetic of the original newspaper panels while utilizing a limited animation technique suited for the early constraints of television production. While the series was a breakthrough for the medium of anime by demonstrating that animation could target mature demographics, its reception was marked by its unconventional tone and the stark contrast it provided to the more heroic and family-oriented programming that would soon come to define the Japanese animation industry.
