Where it came from
Greed Island Final serves as the concluding installment of the Greed Island OVA series, released in 2004 as a direct continuation of Nippon Animation’s adaptation of Yoshihiro Togashi’s manga. Following the conclusion of the 1999 television series, the Greed Island arc was produced as a multi-part OVA to cover the narrative bridge between the Yorknew City arc and the Chimera Ant arc. The production sought to maintain the visual consistency and tone established by the original series while escalating the stakes of the high-fantasy game setting.
The character designs and animation direction prioritize the idiosyncratic style popularized by Togashi, emphasizing the tactical depth of the Nen system and the labyrinthine nature of the game’s mechanics. As a final chapter of the OVA project, the release was received by fans as a faithful, if stylistically distinct, transition piece that preserved the core relationships of the primary cast. It remains a notable entry for its focus on the final confrontation against Genthru, serving as the bridge to the later reimagining of the series.
