HUNTER×HUNTER Pilot-ban

The Hunter×Hunter Pilot-ban, often referred to as the Jump Super Anime Tour special, was produced by Studio Pierrot in 1998 to promote the upcoming serialization of Yoshihiro Togashi’s manga in Weekly Shonen Jump. Created shortly before the long-running television series, this short film served as a proof-of-concept to gauge audience interest and establish the aesthetic tone of the franchise, showcasing an early iteration of the animation style that would eventually define the series’ first television adaptation.

The design of this pilot leaned heavily into the gritty, atmospheric sensibilities of 1990s shonen animation, characterized by a more textured character rendering than the later 1999 television series. Under the direction of the production team at Studio Pierrot, the pilot focused on introducing the core dynamic between Gon Freecss and his initial companions. It was received as a promising glimpse into Togashi’s complex world-building, functioning as a vital historical bridge between the manga’s debut and the subsequent multi-year production of the formal animated series.
