Where it came from
The 1999 adaptation of Hunter x Hunter was produced by Nippon Animation and directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi, following the manga created by Yoshihiro Togashi. It was commissioned in the wake of the manga's surge in popularity during the late 1990s, aiming to translate Togashi's complex narrative and intricate world-building into a long-running television format. The series began airing on Fuji Television in October 1999 and became known for its atmospheric, slightly darker tone compared to its 2011 successor.
Furuhashi, known for his work on Rurouni Kenshin, brought a cinematic and grounded aesthetic to the production. The character designs were handled by Hirokazu Hisatake, who focused on maintaining the distinct proportions and expressive features established in the source material. The series was well-received by fans for its faithfulness to the initial arcs of the story and its distinctive 90s cel-animation aesthetic, though it eventually concluded at the end of the Yorknew City arc.
