Idol Incidents

Idol Incidents, known in Japan as Idol Jihen, was released in 2017 as a multimedia franchise project encompassing a mobile game, a manga series, and this television anime produced by studio MAPPA and studio VOLN. The production emerged during a peak in the popularity of idol-themed anime, attempting to carve out a niche by blending the traditional idol subgenre with political satire. The narrative follows a group of female idols who run for office to revitalize a stagnant Japan, reflecting the cultural obsession with idol culture while parodying the legislative process.

The character designs were overseen by Mai Ishii, who adapted the original illustrations to fit the energetic, colorful aesthetic typical of the mid-2010s idol genre. The series was designed to appeal to both fans of music-driven anime and those interested in the surreal, comedic framing of political empowerment. Upon its release, the show was received as a lighthearted experimental project, noted primarily for its distinct premise that fused catchy musical performances with the bureaucratic settings of the Japanese Diet.
