Where it came from
Ikki Tousen: Shugaku Toshi Keppu-roku was released in 2011 as an original video animation, serving as a continuation of the long-running franchise based on Yuji Shiozaki's manga series. Produced by studio ARMS, the project was designed to transition the series into a new narrative arc, following the established aesthetic that blended high-octane martial arts action with the franchise's signature fan-service tropes.
The production sought to maintain the visual consistency of the previous television seasons while providing a more contained, cinematic experience suited for the OVA format. The design direction remained faithful to Shiozaki's character archetypes, focusing on the reimagining of historical figures from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms in a modern Japanese high school setting. It was received primarily by the established fan base as a necessary bridge between larger story arcs.
