Ikki Tousen: Great Guardians

Ikki Tousen: Great Guardians was released in 2008 as the third television anime adaptation based on the long-running manga series by Yuji Shiozaki. Produced by the studio ARMS, the series continued the narrative framework established in previous seasons, focusing on high school students who serve as the reincarnated spirits of ancient Chinese warlords from the Three Kingdoms period. The production aimed to maintain the series' signature blend of intense martial arts combat and provocative fan service, which had become the hallmark of the franchise since its anime debut in 2003.

The visual direction for Great Guardians leaned heavily into the aesthetics established by ARMS in the preceding season, Dragon Destiny. The design team focused on dynamic, high-energy fight choreography while adhering to the character designs that emphasized athletic, stylized archetypes. Upon release, the series was received primarily by a dedicated fanbase that had followed the franchise's shift from a more grounded martial arts premise into a more overtly surreal and ecchi-focused direction, solidifying its place as a recognizable title within the mid-2000s anime landscape.
