Through the Italian National Broadcasting Network, Tezuka Osamu received an ardent request from the Vatican to make the Bible into animated form. This request was probably made to see how the Bible would be depicted by the non-Christian Tezuka Osamu. Tezuka Osamu accepted the request and spent an entire two years to complete a pilot film. It was about the story of Noah's ark, with the enthusiastic Tezuka Osamu not only writing the scenario but also drawing pictures by himself. During production, however, he unfortunately passed away, so Director Dezaki took over the film and completed it.

Where it came from
In The Beginning: Stories from the Bible was produced in 1997 as a collaborative effort between Tezuka Productions and the RAI (Radiotelevisione Italiana). The series was conceived to provide a comprehensive, animated adaptation of the Old Testament, drawing heavily from the narrative structure of the Bible. It emerged from a long-standing desire to bring classical historical and religious texts to a global audience through the accessible lens of Japanese animation.
The character designs were deeply influenced by Osamu Tezuka’s distinct, rounded aesthetic, even though the production occurred years after his passing. The artistic direction prioritized clarity and moral storytelling, aiming to remain faithful to the source material while maintaining the expressive, cinematic techniques characteristic of Tezuka Productions. Upon its release, it was noted for its ambitious scope and served as a significant example of international co-production in the late 1990s.
