Six long months have passed. The Raalgon Empire has developed a horrible new type of weapon, and Tylor has been charged with the duty of intercepting it as it is being transported. But when all that could go wrong does go wrong, the crew members of the Soyokaze find themselves at the mercy of their enemies. As the hours tick down toward their execution, the crew wonders: has their irresponsible captain misled them? Or is this all a part of some greater strategy?

Where it came from
The Irresponsible Captain Tylor OVA, released in 1994, serves as a narrative expansion to the original television series produced by Studio DEEN. Developed following the conclusion of the broadcast run, these episodes were created to further explore the unorthodox character of Justy Ueki Tylor, a protagonist who subverts traditional military science fiction tropes through his uncanny luck and lack of conventional ambition. The project continued the show's hallmark blend of political satire and lighthearted comedy, set against the backdrop of an interstellar conflict between the United Planets Space Force and the Raalgon Empire.
The character design for the OVA remained consistent with the aesthetic established by the television series, which drew inspiration from Hitoshi Yoshioka's light novel source material. The production team aimed to maintain a balance between high-stakes space opera elements and the irreverent personality of its lead, a style that was well-received by fans of nineties anime for its willingness to poke fun at the rigid hierarchies and heroism typically found in the genre.
