Where it came from
Is This a Zombie?, originally titled Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?, was produced by Studio DEEN and premiered in early 2011. Adapted from the light novel series by Shinichi Kimura, the anime emerged during a period when supernatural comedy was gaining significant traction in Japanese television. The narrative follows Ayumu Aikawa, a high school student resurrected as a zombie by a necromancer, forcing him to navigate a surreal life filled with magical girls and spirits.
The character designs were handled by Shinobu Tagashira, who leaned into a vibrant and eccentric aesthetic to match the series' blending of dark fantasy and slapstick humor. The animation style was specifically tailored to emphasize the absurdity of the premise, utilizing bold color palettes and character models that highlighted the comedic interactions between the lead characters. Upon its release, the series was well-received for its unconventional tone and successfully spawned a second season, solidifying its place as a distinctive entry in the early 2010s anime landscape.
