Where it came from
Released in 2012 by Studio DEEN, this OVA serves as a follow-up to the second season of the anime series Is This a Zombie? of the Dead. It was produced to provide fans with additional narrative content, fitting into the series' trademark blend of supernatural comedy, harem tropes, and absurdist action. The episode maintains the core aesthetic and tone established by the television run, focusing on the protagonist Ayumu Aikawa’s continued struggle to balance his undead existence with the chaotic demands of the magical girls and spirits who surround him.
The series is based on the light novel written by Shinichi Kimura and illustrated by Kobuichi and Muririn. The design philosophy behind this adaptation was to lean heavily into the juxtaposition of horrific themes, like zombies and necromancy, with bright, high-energy animation. Upon release, the OVA was received as a lighthearted extension for the existing audience, appreciated for its commitment to the established character dynamics and its willingness to indulge in the series' signature comedic subversion of traditional battle-shonen expectations.
