Where it came from
The Is This a Zombie? OVA was released in 2011 as a companion piece to the first season of the anime adaptation of Shinichi Kimura’s light novel series. Produced by Studio DEEN, this original video animation was created to satisfy demand from fans of the series' unconventional blend of slapstick comedy, supernatural fantasy, and harem tropes. It serves as an extended episode that maintains the chaotic energy of the television series while providing a lighthearted side story for the core characters.
The animation design follows the established visual identity set by the main series, focusing on high-contrast character models and dynamic action sequences that define the studio's mid-2010s output. Directed by Takaomi Kanasaki, the project was intended to bridge the gap between the first and second television seasons. It was received by the community as a standard supplementary release, favored primarily by those already invested in the eccentric narrative surrounding the protagonist, Ayumu Aikawa.
