Where it came from
Is This a Zombie? of the Dead was produced by Studio DEEN and released in 2012 as the second season of the anime adaptation based on the light novel series by Shinichi Kimura. The series continues the story of Ayumu Aikawa, a high school student resurrected as a zombie by a necromancer, as he navigates a chaotic existence alongside various supernatural beings. The production aimed to maintain the eccentric, genre-bending comedy of the original novels, which blend elements of harem tropes, magical girl parody, and supernatural action.
The visual direction for this season stayed consistent with the stylistic choices established in the 2011 debut, prioritizing bright, comedic character expressions and elaborate transformation sequences. Upon its release, the series was received primarily by the existing fanbase of the light novels, who valued its willingness to lean into absurd humor and non-sequitur scenarios. It remains a notable example of Studio DEEN’s mid-2010s output, reflecting the studio's broader trend of adapting light-hearted, character-driven supernatural light novels for the television format.
