Jian Ling Tongju Riji

Jian Ling Tongju Riji, or The Diary of Living Together with a Spirit, emerged from the Foch studio as part of the mid-2010s wave of Chinese original net animation (ONA). These productions were developed to capture the growing domestic interest in web-based storytelling, blending domestic drama with supernatural elements common in East Asian speculative fiction. The series was designed to appeal to younger digital audiences who were increasingly turning to online platforms for episodic, character-driven narratives that bypassed traditional television constraints.

The animation style and narrative structure of the project reflect a conscious effort to balance stylized character design with a relatable, grounded setting. The creators focused on a cozy, domestic aesthetic to contrast with the mystical nature of the protagonist’s companion, aiming to create a sense of intimacy within the supernatural genre. While the series did not reach the widespread cultural ubiquity of larger industry franchises, it was received as a competent example of the ONA format, valued by its audience for its consistent art style and steady pacing.
