Where it came from
Jinhou Xiangyao, or The Monkey King Conquers the Demon, was released by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio in 1985. It serves as a direct sequel to the iconic 1961 film Uproar in Heaven, continuing the adaptation of the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West. The film was created during a period when the studio sought to revitalize traditional aesthetic styles, combining elements of Chinese ink wash painting and folk opera to depict the legendary narrative of Sun Wukong protecting his master, Tang Sanzang, from the shape-shifting White Bone Demon.
The film was directed by Te Wei, Yan Dingxian, and Lin Wenxiao, who aimed to preserve the artistic integrity of the original 1960s character designs while introducing more complex, atmospheric animation techniques. Upon its release, it was well-received for its cultural significance and sophisticated visuals, winning several domestic awards including the Golden Rooster for Best Animation Film. It remains a hallmark of the Chinese golden age of animation, noted for its rhythmic fight choreography and the distinct personality infused into its mythical protagonists.
