Where it came from
Kamigami no Ki: Xmas Tokubetsu-hen was released as a special holiday-themed installment of the Kamigami no Ki series, which was produced by the animation studio Sotsu. The project was primarily recognized for its unique use of stop-motion animation featuring traditional clay figures, aiming to adapt Japanese mythology and regional folklore into a whimsical, accessible format for a contemporary audience.
The series was directed and designed by Tomoyasu Murata, a renowned figure in the Japanese puppet animation scene. Murata sought to blend archaic storytelling aesthetics with modern digital distribution, and the Christmas special served as a standalone expansion of the established world. The series was generally noted by critics for its distinct visual identity and its commitment to artisanal, handcrafted movement in an era dominated by computer-generated imagery.
