Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty

Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty was released in 2022 as a return to one of Magic: The Gathering’s most evocative settings. Set thousands of years after the original Kamigawa block, this iteration reimagined the plane through a cyberpunk-inspired lens, blending traditional Japanese mythology with high-tech futurism. Wizards of the Coast commissioned the Tokyo-based creative studio maxilla to produce this Original Net Animation to help visualize this tonal shift for players.

The animation serves as a stylistic bridge, emphasizing the contrast between ancient spirit magic and neon-drenched urban landscapes. By focusing on the visual language of anime and modern digital aesthetics, the studio aimed to capture the kinetic energy of the set’s new mechanics and character designs. The production was well-received for its ability to distill the expansion's complex world-building into a concise, atmospheric piece that resonated with both long-time fans of the game and followers of modern Japanese animation.
