A race of cannibal monsters called the Shokujinki exists and it is the job of the Kifuuken, an elite group of beast-hunters, to stop them. Toshihiko Momota, an expert swordsman and son of the Kifuuken organization's leader, unexpectedly falls in love at first sight with a beautiful girl named Yuka. However, the couple's relationship is much more complicated than it seems at first glance, for Yuka is a Shokujinki.

Where it came from
Kemonozume was produced by Studio Madhouse and aired in 2006 as part of Fuji TV's Noitamina programming block. Conceived and directed by Masaaki Yuasa, the series was designed to push the boundaries of conventional television animation. Emerging from a period of creative experimentation in the industry, the show sought to prioritize fluid, non-traditional visual expression over the polished, rigid aesthetics common in contemporary anime productions.
Yuasa’s design philosophy for Kemonozume utilized exaggerated perspectives, raw linework, and a bold color palette to mirror the volatile, carnal nature of its narrative, which centers on the forbidden romance between a human and a flesh-eating monster. Upon its release, it was lauded by critics for its bold artistic vision and thematic depth, cementing Yuasa's reputation as a singular auteur capable of blending high-concept fantasy with intimate, humanistic storytelling.
