Where it came from
Kemono to Chat was produced by Studio Usagi.Ou and released in 2009 as an original video animation. It serves as a visual adaptation of the manga series by Kenjiro Kawatsu, which tells the gentle, whimsical story of a young boy named Chat and his supernatural companion, a kemono. The project emerged during a period of interest in niche, slice-of-life storytelling within the independent animation circuit, aiming to capture the understated charm of the original source material through a modest, character-focused lens.
The animation reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of Usagi.Ou, prioritizing a faithful translation of Kawatsu’s character designs into a moving format. The production was received as a niche curiosity by fans of the source manga, appreciated primarily for its quiet atmosphere and its attempt to honor the heartwarming tone of the original work. While it remains a lesser-known title in the broader landscape of 2000s anime, it represents a dedicated effort to bring a specific, cozy narrative style to the screen.
