kemurikusa.

Kemurikusa was produced by studio Yaoyorozu and directed by Tatsuki, who gained significant industry attention for his work on the first season of Kemono Friends. The series originated as a reimagining of a series of short independent animations produced by the studio irodori, a collective featuring Tatsuki and his core collaborators. Transitioning into a full television broadcast in 2019, the project sought to translate the original's atmospheric, post-apocalyptic mystery into a longer narrative format while maintaining the distinct, minimalist 3D animation style characteristic of the director’s work.

The series focuses on three sisters navigating a desolate, world-ending environment filled with overgrown, inorganic flora known as kemurikusa. Its design emphasizes a subdued color palette and a focus on environmental storytelling, aiming to create a sense of isolation and wonder. Upon its release, it was met with focused interest from fans of the director’s previous output, noted for its unconventional pacing and deeply internal lore, marking a significant effort to establish an original science-fiction world outside of existing intellectual property franchises.
