Kemurikusa (2018)

Kemurikusa originated as an independent web series created and animated by Tatsuki, the director behind the viral sensation Kemono Friends. Initially produced by the independent studio irodori between 2010 and 2012, the project was later reimagined and expanded into a twelve-episode ONA series that premiered in early 2019. Set in a desolate, post-apocalyptic world characterized by red, mist-like vegetation, the story follows three sisters—Rin, Ritsu, and Rina—as they navigate a landscape filled with environmental hazards and mechanical entities.

The series is celebrated for its distinctive low-poly aesthetic and minimalist storytelling, which mirror the creator's signature lo-fi production style. By focusing on atmospheric world-building and character dynamics rather than high-fidelity rendering, Tatsuki aimed to craft a poignant mystery that relied on environmental cues and audience deduction. Upon its release as a full-length series, it was generally well-received for its unique visual identity and emotional depth, standing out as a notable example of creator-driven independent animation finding mainstream success.
