Where it came from
Kick Off 2002, known in South Korea as 'Shooting Star,' was produced by Sonokong and released in 2002 to coincide with the FIFA World Cup hosted by South Korea and Japan. The series was designed to capitalize on the national fervor surrounding the tournament, aiming to inspire young viewers with themes of athletic perseverance and team camaraderie set against a backdrop of professional soccer.
The production sought to blend traditional animation techniques with the high-energy aesthetic of early 2000s sports anime. While it served as a significant marketing tie-in for the studio during a peak moment of cultural pride in Korea, the series remains a niche piece of television history, remembered primarily by collectors interested in the intersection of sports media and domestic Korean animation from the early millennium.
