Where it came from
Kiddy GiRL-AND was produced by studio Satelight and released in 2009 as a spiritual successor to the 2002 series Kiddy Grade. Directed by Keiji Gotoh, the series was conceived to revisit the science fiction universe established by the G.I.O. (Galactic Intelligence Organization) while shifting the tone toward a lighter, character-focused aesthetic. It was developed to capture a sense of continuity for fans of the original while introducing a new cast of protagonists, Ascoeur and Q-feuille, who embody the series' themes of youthful camaraderie and high-stakes adventure.
The character designs were handled by the artist group Peach-Pit, known for their distinctively expressive style. Their influence is evident in the show's vibrant color palette and the stylized, whimsical appearance of the protagonists, which contrasted notably with the more serious, hard-science-fiction sensibilities of its predecessor. While the series received a dedicated following among enthusiasts of the genre, it was generally viewed by critics as a stylistic departure that aimed to lean into the playful, slice-of-life elements of the space-opera subgenre.
