Where it came from
KING OF PRISM by Pretty Rhythm emerged in 2016 as a spin-off of the Pretty Rhythm series, specifically expanding upon the Prism King Cup arc from the Rainbow Live iteration. Produced by Tatsunoko Production, the film was designed to elevate the franchise's signature 'Prism Shows'—performances blending figure skating, dance, and concert spectacle—into a high-energy cinematic experience aimed at a dedicated fanbase that had grown alongside the characters.
The film was directed by Masakazu Hishida, who worked closely with writer Jo Aoba to lean into the franchise's surreal and hyper-stylized aesthetic. By focusing on the male idols of the Edel Rose training school, the production team sought to subvert traditional sports-anime tropes through extravagant visuals and camp sensibilities. Upon release, it was met with significant enthusiasm, eventually spawning a series of sequels and becoming a cult success known for its participatory 'cheering screenings' where audiences actively engage with the film.
