Where it came from
King of Prism: Pride the Hero is a 2017 feature film produced by Tatsunoko Production, serving as the direct sequel to the 2016 hit King of Prism by Pretty Rhythm. The film emerged from the spin-off project of the Pretty Rhythm franchise, which transitioned from a multi-media series into a standalone cult phenomenon centered on the hyper-stylized world of 'Prism Stars.' It was created to expand upon the dramatic internal conflicts of the Over The Rainbow members and the burgeoning rivalry with the group Edel Rose, continuing the director Masakida Hishida’s vision of blending traditional idol-anime tropes with surreal, experimental visual sequences.
The film's design aesthetic is characterized by its high-energy, kaleidoscopic musical performances, which prioritize visual spectacle over realism. The artistic direction was intended to push the boundaries of what a sports-and-performance-themed anime could look like, utilizing vibrant color palettes and chaotic, meta-textual humor to engage a dedicated fanbase. Upon release, it was received as a significant escalation of the franchise's absurdist charm, earning critical praise for its bold refusal to adhere to standard storytelling conventions while solidifying its place in the niche but highly active subculture of idol-performance anime.
