KochiKame

KochiKame, short for Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen-mae Hashutsujo, was produced as an animated television series by Studio Gallop and Asatsu DK starting in 1996. It adapted the long-running manga series by Osamu Akimoto, which centers on the comedic daily life of Kankichi Ryotsu, a middle-aged, eccentric police officer stationed at a neighborhood box in Tokyo. The transition to television allowed the franchise to reach a broader demographic, anchoring its success in its portrayal of traditional Japanese community life paired with slapstick humor.

The character designs were handled by the production team to translate Akimoto's distinct illustrative style into a format suitable for weekly broadcast television. The series was designed to maintain a balance between episodic gag comedy and light-hearted social commentary, reflecting the mundane yet chaotic nature of the original manga.
