Kochira Katsushikaku Kameari Kouenmae Hashutsujo Special: Tokushu Keiji Kaimetsu!? Lemon to Nazo no Touzokudan!

Released in 2004, this television special was a unique deviation from the long-running Kochira Katsushikaku Kameari Kouenmae Hashutsujo anime series. Produced by Studio Gallop and based on the legendary manga by Osamu Akimoto, the episode was designed to breathe new life into the franchise by shifting away from the standard daily life format of the police station to a more high-stakes, adventure-driven narrative. The introduction of the character Lemon was intended to test new dynamics for Kankichi Ryotsu, placing the eccentric officer in a mentor-like role amidst a mystery plot.

The special was helmed by the established production team behind the series, who sought to leverage the popularity of the manga's milestone years. By focusing on the mysterious thief subplot, the writers aimed to maintain the series' signature brand of slapstick humor while introducing elements of detective fiction. Upon its broadcast, it was received as a nostalgic yet refreshing addition to the franchise, solidifying the series' status as a staple of Japanese animation and maintaining the character of Ryotsu as a cross-generational cultural icon.
