Where it came from
La Seine no Hoshi, or The Star of the Seine, was produced by Sunrise and aired in 1975 against the backdrop of the French Revolution. It was conceptualized as a historical adventure series, drawing clear stylistic and thematic inspiration from the immense success of The Rose of Versailles. The narrative follows Simone Lorène, a young florist who adopts a masked vigilante persona to protect the oppressed during the tumultuous period leading up to the fall of the monarchy.
The series was designed to blend the romanticized drama of French historical fiction with the tropes of the magical girl and swashbuckling genres. While it was overshadowed by the cultural juggernaut of its contemporary peers, the show is noted for its distinctive character designs and its earnest attempt to weave historical landmarks into a shōjo-oriented plot. It remains a notable example of the studio's mid-70s creative output during their formative transition toward more character-driven storytelling.
