Luo Xiaohei Zhan Ji: Zhongsheng Zhi Men

Luo Xiaohei Zhan Ji, known in English as The Legend of Hei, began as a modest web animation project created by the Chinese animator MTJJ in 2011. The series grew from a niche passion project into a cultural phenomenon, celebrated for its unique blend of whimsical, minimalist character design and intricate, high-stakes world-building. Zhongsheng Zhi Men, or The Gate of Rebirth, represents the cinematic expansion of this universe, continuing the narrative of the titular black spirit cat as he navigates a world caught between human modernization and supernatural tradition.

The production by HMCH emphasizes the series' signature aesthetic, which balances traditional 2D animation techniques with fluid, dynamic action sequences. The design philosophy centers on the contrast between Hei’s simple, rounded appearance and the complex, detailed landscapes of the human world. Upon release, the series and its associated media were lauded for their emotional depth and artistic integrity, solidifying MTJJ’s reputation as a pioneer in modern Chinese independent animation.
