Lupin III: Angel Tactics

Lupin III: Angel Tactics, released in 2005, represents a significant chapter in the long-running franchise produced by TMS Entertainment. As an annual television special, it was designed to capture the classic heist-adventure tone of Monkey Punch's original manga while adapting to the digital-era aesthetics of the mid-2000s. The production sought to balance the familiar dynamic between Lupin, Jigen, Goemon, and Fujiko with a narrative centered on the mysterious 'Bloody Teardrop' and the shadowy organization known as the Bloody Angels.

The character designs and animation direction for this special were led by veteran talent associated with the TMS studio, aiming to modernize the character silhouettes while maintaining the sharp, cynical humor that defined the series since the 1970s. Upon release, it was received as a standard but competent entry in the Lupin canon, often noted for its emphasis on action sequences and the return of the recurring Inspector Zenigata dynamic. It remains a hallmark of the experimental period for the franchise before the shift toward more stylized spin-offs like The Woman Called Fujiko Mine.
