Two years after the birth of the manga a pilot film was realized. It was a brief film of only 15 minutes that had the purpose of assay the response to a possible future anime realization of Lupin III. The pilot opens with a challenge call from Lupin to Zenigata from a public phone.
A remastered version was realised in 1978, re-photographed in cinemascope and re-dubbed for being screened in cinema before the 1st movie The Secret of Mamo.

Where it came from
The Lupin III pilot film was produced in 1967 by Tokyo Movie Shinsha as a promotional tool intended to secure a television series adaptation of Monkey Punch's popular manga. Created to showcase the potential of a high-energy, adult-oriented animated caper, the film aimed to translate the manga's dark, sophisticated tone into a cinematic format. It served as a vital proof of concept, successfully demonstrating that the character's blend of larceny and wit could thrive in motion.
Directed by Masaaki Osumi, the pilot was crafted with a distinctive, gritty aesthetic that leaned heavily into the stylistic sensibilities of late-sixties espionage and heist films. While the pilot remained unreleased to the general public for many years, it was instrumental in the evolution of the franchise, influencing the visual direction of the subsequent television series and helping to solidify the essential character archetypes that defined the Lupin legacy for decades to come.
