Imamiya Satoshi, "Sasshi" to his friends, has grown up in the Abenobashi Shopping Arcade in Osaka, along with his childhood friend, Asahina Arumi. Now, all that was stable in his life is in ruins. His family's bath house has closed and been torn down, and Arumi's family is moving to Hokkaido - and taking her with them. In the midst of all this, something happens to the framework of reality, and Sasshi and Arumi slip into a weird parallel world. It's still Abenobashi, but not their Abenobashi. Strange things are afoot, and Sasshi must find out their meaning, in order to reach a goal that he barely understands.

Where it came from
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi was produced by Studio Gainax and Madhouse in 2002, serving as a creative departure for directors Hiroyuki Yamaga and Kazuya Tsurumaki. Emerging from the legendary Gainax studio, the series was conceived as an energetic, genre-bending homage to the Otaku culture of the 1990s. The narrative centers on two childhood friends trapped in a series of parallel worlds, each styled after different film or anime genres, providing a satirical lens through which the studio could playfully deconstruct their own artistic history and the conventions of the medium.
The series is noted for its maximalist visual style, characterized by chaotic transitions and vibrant, erratic animation that mirrors the frantic nature of its protagonists. Designed to be both a comedy and a psychological study of growing up, the show was received as a cult classic. While it diverged significantly from the studio's more serious works like Evangelion, critics praised the project for its inventive art direction and its poignant, grounded conclusion that anchors the show's absurdity in the relatable experience of leaving childhood behind.
