Where it came from
Mahoutsukai no Yome: Gakuin-hen, also known as The Ancient Magus' Bride: The Golden Yarn, was produced in 2019 by Studio Kafka, which was established specifically to carry on the animation of the franchise following the initial series by WIT Studio. This project served as a bridge and a showcase for the narrative arc involving Chise Hatori’s enrollment in the College, aiming to translate the intricate, folkloric atmosphere of Kore Yamazaki’s manga into a condensed, high-quality visual format.
The creative direction for this installment maintained the series' established aesthetic, characterized by a melancholic, ethereal color palette and a focus on the tactile, magical details of the world. By shifting the focus to the academic setting of the College, the production team sought to explore the broader societal structures of the show's supernatural world. It was generally well-received by fans for its faithfulness to the source material's tone and the continued evolution of Chise’s character development.
