Where it came from
Mahoutsukai Sally, or Sally the Witch, premiered in 1967 as the first magical girl anime produced by Toei Animation. Inspired by the American television series Bewitched, the show was created by Mitsuteru Yokoyama, the prolific mangaka also responsible for Tetsujin 28-go. The series introduced a foundational archetype to the genre, featuring a young princess from the Magic Kingdom who explores the human world while navigating the complexities of friendship and morality.
The character design reflects the transition of shojo manga aesthetics into early television animation, emphasizing expressive features and a whimsical charm that captured the imagination of post-war Japanese youth. Its success established the 'magical girl' subgenre, paving the way for future icons like Sailor Moon. The series is regarded as a cultural milestone for its influence on the animation industry's approach to fantasy-driven storytelling for young audiences.
