Where it came from
Mashin Creator Wataru emerges as a 2025 continuation of the iconic franchise that first captivated audiences in the late 1980s. Produced by Sunrise, this series serves as a modern reimagining, blending the nostalgic adventure of the original Mashin Hero Wataru with contemporary animation techniques. The production aims to bridge the gap between long-time fans who grew up with the 8-bit aesthetic and a new generation, maintaining the core themes of friendship and heroism while expanding the world-building of the spirit realm.
The visual design of this series reflects a deliberate evolution of the 'super deformed' mecha style that defined the franchise's identity. Designers at Sunrise sought to honor the charm of the original clay-model-inspired aesthetics while utilizing digital fluidity to allow for more dynamic combat sequences. Early critical reception has focused on the series' ability to balance this updated visual language with the lighthearted, earnest spirit that made the Wataru name a staple of the fantasy-adventure genre.
