Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru

Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru debuted in 1988, produced by Sunrise during a period when the studio was heavily experimenting with blending fantasy adventure tropes with mecha elements. Created by Oji Hiroi, the series follows a young boy transported to a magical world where he pilots the Ryujinmaru, a robot designed to resemble a samurai. The project emerged from a desire to capture a younger demographic by combining the appeal of role-playing games with serialized, character-driven animation.

The aesthetic of the series, characterized by its super-deformed or 'chibi' mecha designs, was a distinct departure from the more grounded or militaristic robot anime of the era. Shuji Imai served as the character designer, aiming for an accessible, lighthearted visual style that balanced humor with action sequences. The show was received positively for its imaginative world-building and memorable monster designs, eventually spawning multiple sequels and becoming a significant fixture in the Sunrise catalog.
