Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru 2

Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru 2 was produced by Sunrise and first aired in 1990 as the direct sequel to the original 1988 adventure series. Developed during a period when the studio was refining the blend of fantasy role-playing game tropes and mecha action, the series follows the protagonist Wataru Ikusabe as he is summoned back to the magical realm of Soukaizan. The narrative focus on a young hero navigating a stylized, multi-layered world allowed the production team to experiment with more complex character dynamics while maintaining the lighthearted spirit that defined the franchise's initial success.

The visual identity of the series was heavily influenced by the character designs of Toyoo Ashida, whose signature soft-edged, expressive aesthetic provided a distinct contrast to the more rigid mecha designs common in the industry at the time. This approach was intentional, aiming to make the 'Mashin'—the modular, toy-like robots—feel like extensions of the characters' personalities rather than mere weapons. Upon release, the series was well-received by its target audience, solidifying its place in the 90s animation landscape and ensuring the continued viability of the associated merchandise line that featured prominently in Japanese retail spaces of the era.
