Where it came from
Mashin Hero Wataru: A Story At An Endless Time was released in 1993 as the third original video animation series tied to the popular Mashin Hero Wataru franchise. Following the success of the television series and its sequel, this production was designed to bridge the narrative gap between existing installments, expanding the lore of the Sōkaizan world. It was produced by Sunrise, a studio renowned for its expertise in the mecha genre, and maintained the franchise's trademark blend of fantasy adventure and comedic character dynamics.
The creative direction for this installment continued the aesthetic established by the earlier series, featuring character designs by Toyoo Ashida. Ashida was instrumental in defining the franchise's visual identity, focusing on a playful, exaggerated style that complemented the whimsical nature of the mecha designs. Upon release, the OVA was well-received by fans of the series who were eager for additional content, serving as a significant touchstone in the 1990s era of Sunrise’s fantasy-adventure catalog.
