Where it came from
Meng Li Ren, or Dream of the Beauty, was produced by CCTV Animation during a period of significant growth for Chinese domestic animation. The series emerged from a push by state broadcasters to blend traditional aesthetic sensibilities with serialized storytelling aimed at a broad family audience, seeking to capture cultural interest through stylized character designs and themes rooted in historical or legendary tropes.
The production relied on the studio's established digital animation workflows of the time, focusing on delivering a visual experience that felt distinct from international imports. It was received as a contribution to the medium's attempt to modernize folklore-inspired narratives, serving as a staple of early 21st-century CCTV programming and reflecting the studio's broader mission to curate content that balanced entertainment with national cultural narratives.
