Where it came from
Mu Wang Zhi Wang: Xuan Guan Si, or The King of Graves: The Mysterious Pass, debuted in 2016 as a flagship 3D animated production from the Chinese studio Build Dream. The series is set within a wuxia-inspired fantasy world where professional grave robbers, known as the Tomb Guarding Sect, are tasked with protecting the burial sites of past emperors. It emerged during a period of rapid expansion for the Chinese animation industry, aiming to blend high-fidelity motion capture with intricate martial arts choreography to compete with established domestic blockbusters.
The series was designed to emphasize visual spectacle, featuring complex character models and elaborate environments that distinguish the various tomb factions. By focusing on the 'King of Graves' mythology, the creators sought to revitalize traditional folklore through a modern, serialized narrative. Upon its release, the show was noted for its ambitious technical execution and its attempt to elevate the narrative depth of 3D-animated wuxia, garnering a dedicated following for its distinctive aesthetic and world-building.
