Where it came from
Mura Matsuri originated from U17, a studio known for its role in the independent Chinese animation landscape. Produced as an animated feature, the film emerged during a period of growth for domestic digital animation, reflecting the studio's attempt to engage with folklore-inspired narratives through a distinct visual lens. It serves as a representative example of the studio's early aesthetic experimentation with character design and motion.
The creative direction behind the project focused on stylized, expressive character work intended to differentiate the film from mainstream industrial output. While the reception was niche, it became a point of interest for followers of the independent Chinese animation scene, who analyzed the project for its stylistic departures and its contribution to the studio's evolving portfolio of short-form and feature-length animated storytelling.
