Meimi Haneoka, 14, is a normal girl during the daytime, but during the night, she assumes the "position" of Saint Tail, a modern-day Robin Hood who steals from thieves and gives items back to their original owners. She is aided by her friend, Seira Mimori, a nun-in-training, and she is chased by her classmate (and soon-to-be love interest), Daiki Asuka (often called "Asuka Jr.").

Where it came from
Mysterious Thief Saint Tail emerged in 1995 as a television anime adaptation of the manga series by Megumi Tachikawa. Produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha and directed by Osamu Nabeshima, the series follows Meimi Haneoka, a schoolgirl who moonlights as a vigilante thief to recover stolen items. The project was conceived during the mid-nineties, a period when the magical girl genre was expanding its reach, and the studio sought to blend the classic mystery-solving tropes of the phantom thief aesthetic with lighthearted shojo romantic comedy.
The series is noted for its distinctive character designs, which emphasize vibrant outfits and fluid animation sequences during the protagonist's transformation and performance acts. Designed to appeal to a broad audience, the show received a positive reception for its focus on character growth and its gentle take on the cat-and-mouse dynamic between Saint Tail and her classmate, the detective Asuka Jr. It remains a representative example of the optimistic tone prevalent in the anime landscape of that era.
