Night Raid 1931 Specials

Night Raid 1931 was an original anime series produced by A-1 Pictures and Aniplex, set in 1930s Shanghai. The specials were released in 2010 to expand upon the series' premise, which centers on the Sakurai Kikan, a secret intelligence agency operating during a tumultuous period of shifting geopolitical tensions in East Asia. The series was noted for its attempt to blend historical noir aesthetics with supernatural elements, reflecting a creative effort to reimagine early 20th-century espionage thrillers for a modern animation audience.

The production sought a distinct visual identity, leaning into a moody, muted color palette that emphasized the atmosphere of pre-war Shanghai. While the series received moderate attention for its unique period setting and artistic ambitions, it remains a niche entry in the Aniplex catalog. Critics generally recognized the design choices as a departure from typical genre tropes, though the narrative density of the limited episode run meant the specials served primarily as supplemental lore for viewers already invested in the agency's clandestine operations.
