One Piece Film: Red

One Piece Film: Red was produced by Toei Animation and released in 2022 to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Eiichiro Oda’s long-running manga series. Directed by Goro Taniguchi, who had previously worked on the franchise’s very first animation project, the film was designed to bridge the gap between the core series and a music-centric narrative. The story centers on Uta, a world-famous diva and daughter of the pirate Red-Haired Shanks, introducing a complex emotional arc that explores the divide between pirate lifestyles and public spectacle.

The film’s design leaned heavily into a vibrant, concert-inspired aesthetic, featuring significant musical contributions from the Japanese artist Ado, whose character vocals drove the film’s unique identity. It was received as a cultural phenomenon upon release, notable for its experimental shift toward a musical-theatrical hybrid format. By blending high-stakes action with a heavy emphasis on auditory performance, the production successfully appealed to both long-time fans of the series and a broader demographic interested in J-pop culture.
