Where it came from
Onegai My Melody premiered in 2005 as a television series produced by TV Osaka, serving as the debut anime adaptation for Sanrio's character My Melody. The series was designed to expand the reach of the character, who had been a staple of Sanrio's lineup since the 1970s, by placing her in an episodic, magical-girl-inspired narrative centered on the battle between dreams and nightmares.
The show's aesthetic reflects the vibrant and whimsical character design signature of Sanrio, aiming to capture the interest of young viewers while introducing a comedic, self-aware tone that broadened its appeal. It was well-received for its distinct sense of humor and emotional depth, eventually spawning multiple sequel seasons and cementing the franchise's presence in the competitive landscape of early 2000s children's television.
