Where it came from
Oshiri Tantei: SHIRIARTY was released in 2022 as part of the Toei Hero Matsuri, serving as the first feature-length film adaptation of the popular children's book series by Troll. The film was produced by Toei Animation to expand the franchise’s reach beyond its television series and picture book origins, positioning the protagonist, a detective with a head shaped like a pair of buttocks, against a formidable criminal mastermind known as Shiriarty.
The film’s character design and animation style remain faithful to the distinct, minimalist aesthetic established by the original illustrated books, emphasizing clear shapes and expressive, humorous characterizations. Director Masayuki Ota and the production team sought to maintain a tone that balanced mystery-solving elements with the slapstick comedy and visual puns that define the series, receiving praise from fans for successfully translating the source material's charm into a theatrical format.
