Where it came from
Osiris no Tenbin, or The Scales of Osiris, was produced in 2015 as an original net animation series directed and written by Hiroshi Fukutomi. The series was designed as a compact, experimental mystery thriller, consisting of extremely short segments that debuted online to test the viability of micro-storytelling within the anime medium. Its aesthetic and narrative approach favored minimalism, focusing on suspense and psychological tension rather than complex animation sequences.
The series centers on an enigmatic assassin who evaluates the moral worth of his targets before executing them, a premise that draws heavily on themes of retributive justice and existential judgment. It was received by audiences as an unconventional entry in the psychological thriller genre, noted specifically for its dark tone and its reliance on dialogue-driven tension to compensate for its brief runtime. The production reflects a shift in mid-2010s Japanese media toward bite-sized, episodic web content intended for rapid digital consumption.
