Where it came from
Oshiri Tantei: STAR AND MOON is a 2025 cinematic entry in the long-running franchise based on the children's book series by Troll. Produced by Toei Animation, the project serves as a theatrical expansion of the popular animated television series, which first debuted in 2018. The franchise centers on the eccentric detective known as the Butt Detective, a character defined by his unique physical appearance and his penchant for solving complex mysteries with a signature flair, effectively blending slapstick humor with deductive reasoning for a young demographic.
The visual design follows the established aesthetic of the television series, prioritizing clean, bright character silhouettes and accessible, high-energy animation suitable for family audiences. By bringing the character to the big screen, the creative team aimed to elevate the production values while maintaining the whimsical, puzzle-solving spirit that defines the source material. Upon its release, the film was positioned as a significant milestone for the property, continuing the studio's tradition of adapting successful literary intellectual properties into successful multimedia franchises.
