Provenance

Where it came from

Ozanari Dungeon: Kaze no Tou was produced in 1991 by Tokyo Movie Shinsha as an original video animation, serving as an adaptation of the fantasy manga series by Motoo Koyama. The project emerged during a period of significant growth for the OVA market in Japan, which allowed studios to explore niche fantasy and adventure titles that might not have been suitable for serialized television broadcast. The narrative centers on a group of adventurers navigating a labyrinthine world, reflecting the widespread influence of tabletop role-playing games on Japanese media during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The character designs and animation direction were tasked with translating Koyama’s distinct manga aesthetic into a fluid, motion-based medium. While the OVA was intended to capture the lighthearted, high-fantasy tone of the source material, it was received as a modest entry in a crowded market of fantasy animation. Over the years, the production has maintained a position as a representative example of early 90s direct-to-video fantasy animation, characterized by the traditional cel-based aesthetic that defined the studio's output during that era.
